Furnace

Do I Need a New Furnace?

It’s almost time to turn up the thermostat and prepare for chilly weather. But it isn’t all cozy sweaters and cuddling under the blankets. Your furnace might be too old and worn out to last another high usage season. Best to get a new unit installed before winter comes. But is it really time for replacement? Here are a few signs and indicators to watch for:

  1. High Electric Bills

This is one of the biggest signs it is time for replacement, and it isn’t because of rising rates. If your heating expenses are costing more and more each year, even with furnace repair, then your furnace isn’t generating enough heat. Maybe the filters are clogged, or there is dust in the ducts. A heating technician should be able to solve those problems and get your furnace back on track. If bills are still high, the heating system might be too old to operate efficiently.

  1. Strange Sounds

You might notice popping, squealing, loud bangs. These are not uncommon, and when they grow more frequent and pronounced it could be time for a new furnace. The only sound you should hear is the blower turning on and off.

  1. Foul Smell

I you smell a strong gas odor you need to call the gas company or heating repair right away. A carbon monoxide leak in your heat exchanger could be serious, even deadly. Check to make sure your burner flame is still lit and blue. If it is out, or yellow, that could indicate a carbon monoxide leak. The toxic gas could be poison to your family, and you need to address the issue right away.

  1. Hot and Cold in Different Rooms

If hot and cold spots are popping up around your home, your furnace probably isn’t distributing air as it should. Another warning sign is cold air coming out of the vents when it should be warm.

  1. Poor Air Quality

If your house is stuffier, dryer, and dustier than normal, it could indicate your furnace does not distribute air properly. Often those with dust or pollen allergies will be the first to notice. Poor air distribution can also cause dry skin, or an itchy nose and throat. You might even notice the accumulation of dust or static build up.

  1. Constant Breakdowns

Do you feel like you’ve constantly had to call for heating and air conditioning repairs in the last two years? Furnaces actually incur more frequent breakdowns in the last few years of life. If one part replacement leads to another and another, those furnace repairs will add up quickly. In the long run it could save you money to get your furnace upgraded rather than constantly paying for replacement parts.

  1. Visible Signs of Corrosion

If you notice cracks in your furnace or visible signs of rust it could mean your furnace is reaching the end of its life.

  1. Furnace is Over 15 Years

Perhaps your furnace has simply reached the age of retirement. The average life expectancy of a heating system is 15 to 20 years. Too much beyond that and you could suffer a full on break down at any moment. At about 15 years you should start planning financially to invest in a new furnace.
